Aluminium windows are popular for two very important reasons: durability and low maintenance. These two characteristics make them a good choice for many houses and apartments in Dublin. However, even if in the beginning, people like the silver colour of their window frames, there comes a time when they may get tired of it. So, instead of replacing your windows altogether, the simplest option is to paint them. And aluminium frames paint very easily.
On the other hand, if you have already decided to replace your windows and chose the aluminium frames, you can opt for a certain colour because many window manufacturers offer a diverse palette of colours.
So how do you paint aluminium windows?
First, you have to prepare them, meaning that you need to clean them very, very well, to remove any dirt that will be visible after you apply the paint. A simple cleaning solution is a mix of powder soap and warm water. Rinse with a lot of water to remove the soap. Leave them to dry for at least 48 hours.
Second, prepare the area. Cover the glass with painting tape and the surrounding area with cloths or old newspapers.
When the area is prepared, the first thing you need to do is apply a metal etching primer on the frames with a latex paint brush. This primer is important because without it, the colour won’t stick to your window frames. If you’re in a hurry, to help it dry faster, you can mix half a litre of paint thinner to 4 litres of primer. Leave them to dry for minimum 4 hours.
When purchasing paint for your aluminium windows, make sure you buy acrylic latex paint in the colour you want. To spread it, use the same latex paint brush as before. After the primer has dried, apply one coat of acrylic paint and let it dry for at least 2 hours. For more even and smoother coverage, you can apply a second, even a third coat of paint. But remember to let them dry for 2 hours after each coat.
When they are completely dried, remove the paint tape and clean the area.
There, your aluminium windows look brand new, just like they were newly installed.
